Hello everyone!
This is about our small, dense tuxedo cat with the howl of a husky:
Alara.
Over two weeks ago Alara started limping, so we took her to the vet. On the outside there didn't seem to be any massive issues: no bite wounds, nothing broken and only a reaction from her when her knee was moved.
After a week of painkillers and no change, we went back, got different painkillers and the instructions to call back next Monday.
Still no change and another call with the vet later, we were on our way to the orthopaedist.
Sadly Alara is a worm on a string and an expert at wiggling, so the X-ray pictures were a little inconclusive, but what we know as of now is:
- there is a swelling in her knee
- there might be an issue in her lower spine (a herniated disk)
Either way we'll have to come back for a CT scan, which she'll need to be sedated for - remember, worm on a string. After the scan there is potentially a surgery waiting for her.
Now this puts a financial strain on us that we hadn't anticipated. The CT scan will put us out 800 €, the surgery potentially around 900€ (if it's the knee surgery). We are still waiting on the information email about exact costs and will also know more after the scan.
I'll update here with the information that is given to us, as we want to be as transparent as we can.
So far we have paid 460,40 € for her treatment (two vet visits + painkillers, orthopaedist visit + X-ray), which we aren't looking to cover with this. We are trying our utmost to pay what we can by ourselves, however a hit of potentially additionally (almost) 2k is a heavy one for us and we would be eternally greatful for any support!
So for now the set goal is 1700 € to cover both the scan and the surgery she will potentially need after.
I don't think it will be the case, but should we receive more than we end up needing for Alara's treatment, then we'll donate that money to an animal shelter or other animal/pet related support system! (Most likely local to us)
Additionally I'd like to offer some things in return, if any of you need any of the services we can provide:
- Translation (EN > GER), specialised in video games
- Voice Over (EN and GER), both my girlfriend and I are trained Voice Over Artists/actors
- Taichi/Swordfighting training session (basics online or locally in Vienna)
Please reach out for more details and lets have a chat!
Thank you in advance for any support you can give (no matter if donation or sharing)! And we'll keep you update on the fate of our screaming gremlin:
UPDATE - 11.11.2025
First of all: Thank you so very much from the bottom of our hearts. All your support and donations have made it possible for us to sleep a little lighter at night and has made it infinitely easier to simply schedule the appointments Alara needs. Thank you!!
The CT scan is scheduled for this Friday (14.11.2025), but before that we were asked to go and get a blood test done, which we had done today.
Alara was really good and well behaved and it was a simple vet visit, however adding the cost of 141 € to the bill. (Thankfully though her blood results look good, so beside the problem leg apparently a very healthy cat.)
We'll update again after Friday to let you all know what the next steps are!
UPDATE - 14.11.2025
The doctors changed their mind and wanted to do a MRT instead of a CT scan, however they checked Alara over again before doing any of that and after her being sedated.
Her being out and therefore cooperative made it easier to check and the conclusion is that we do not need a CT or MRT, as it is 99% sure that the issue is a torn or ripped crutiate ligament in her knee.
This means we paid 280 € today, which was a deposit for the scans and the potential X-ray. As only the X-ray and the sedation was needed today, this leaves us with a credit of 97 € (as the cost would have been 183 €) with them, which we'll be deducted from the cost of the surgery Alara will need.
The surgery cost will be 1493 €, so with the credit deducted, we'll have to cover another 1396 €. The total cost of all vet visits and treatments therefore costs us 2039,40 €.
We are so grateful for all the support we've already received, but would like to ask for your help again with sharing the fundraiser, so it might reach some more people happy to help out!
Thank you so much for all you've already done, you guys are all amazing! <3
Love,
Oscar & Selen
