Travis & Haley Lahaina Maui Fire Relief

On August 8, 2023 I, Haley Celeste Miller along with my fiancé Travis Cabanilla Okano and our three kids, Caleb (11), Nash (9) and Mila (5) left our home with the clothes on our back minutes before it burned down. Our home, our farm with 77 animals (goats, chickens and pigs) perished in the Lāhainā fire.

As we piece our lives back together day by day we are seeing the reality of our circumstances having no long term solution to housing and as many of the local community knows, it is not easy to live in our town, work full time, raise kids, buy food, pay rent and afford to buy a home. Hawaii has the highest living costs with the lowest wages and as a 5 generational farming family of Lāhainā we found an opportunity to become land owners of a property that our family has been farming on for 30+ years, so we put our entire life savings and some into a small plot 2 years ago.

The only way we as an Ohana could afford it was by doing a seller finance loan, giving us two years to turn it into a construction loan. Now with the circumstances; we have three ways to move forward which is buy the land outright and lessen the cost of the build, try to get approval for a construction loan with 30% of income loss after the fire, or lose our land back to the seller.

I am humbly praying that somehow, someway we can receive support to have the opportunity to be stewards of this land and keep it in our generational Lāhainā family.
