Travis Breese loves being in nature. As a full-time student he is studying environmental biology at the Washburn University. As an AmeriCorps member he has dedicated a year of service to rebuilding trails and improving infrastructure in Kansas state parks. As an avid mountain biker and nature lover he frequently explores the trails at Kaw River State Park. On Sunday, March 3rd Travis was in a bike accident on the trail.
While enjoying the well known trail and executing a favorite jump, his leg collided with a small but mighty tree at a devastating speed. Despite the excruciating pain and significant blood loss he was able to call 911. After a twenty minute trail search the first responders and paramedics were able to locate him and rush him to the Stormont Vail trauma center. Travis sustained multiple compound fractures breaking both his Tibia and Fibula. On Sunday night the trauma surgery team cleaned, evaluated and stabilized his leg. Due to the extent of the injury and length of time his open wounds were exposed infection is a serious concern. He is waiting for the swelling to subside so the orthopedic surgeons can start to piece his leg back together.
Not only is the physical impact a devestating blow but the medical bills will be insurmountable. As a full-time student and part-time national service member Travis is uninsured. While he won’t have the actual cost for the ambulance ride, multiple surgeries, and more than a week in the hospital for a few weeks we know it’s an amount he will never be able to repay without the kindness of family, friends, fans, and generous strangers.
Travis is someone who loves life and lives it to the fullest. He is a musician, rescue dog Dad, volunteer at multiple local nonprofits, traveler, and the friend you call when you need a favor! Travis and his fiancé Haley have been planning a wedding in a Tennessee state park in October and were not anticipating this for better or worse in sickness or health situation.
On behalf of Travis, Haley and his entire support team we thank you for your support and for helping us share his story.
