Support Philosophers of Science WCP 2024

The 25th World Congress of Philosophy will take place in Rome the first week of August 2024. Like many conferences that are good for attracting attention for one’s research (e.g., APA, PSA), this conference is self-pay. There are many philosophers around the world who should have the opportunity to participate but cannot afford to travel there (and presentations over zoom are not permitted). I think those of us who can afford to should help.

The proceeds from this particular GoFundMe campaign will go to travel stipends for philosophers of science around the world whose papers or panel proposals are accepted for the World Congress of Philosophy next August, but for whom self-pay conferences are prohibitively expensive. (Check it out: there may be other GoFundMe campaigns for other sections of the Congress.)

Here are rough estimates of the (current) cost of a flight to Rome and 3-star hotel for 8 days of conferencing (i.e., not including ground transportation, food, or €250 conference registration fee) from:

Auckland $2,800

Sao Paolo $3,000

Santiago $3,000

Cape Town $2,000

Singapore $2,000

Mumbai $1,800

The travel stipends from this campaign will be used to give stipends of up to $5,000, depending on need. Any funds remaining after the philosophers of science have stipends will be used to fund people with accepted papers in the Philosophy of Life Sciences, Philosophy of the Human and Social Sciences, Philosophy of Physics, and Philosophy of Medicine sections of the World Congress.
