Katie Carroccia has been recruited to be a part of a medical and psychological response team in Nepal. Following the devastation of the recent earthquake, government leaders recognized the need for stronger disaster preparedness within government, medical, and response agencies to work with the devastating effects of trauma. This team will be implementing trauma-healing, psychological first aid, and disaster response workshops in Katmandu, Nepal. These workshops are designed for professionals including mental health practitioners, social workers, body-workers, governmental agencies, medical personnel, and others who are interested in learning more about the disaster response system and how to work with the trauma that inevitably follows disaster.
Disaster response requires the ability to work as a closely connected team member within an environment steeped in trauma. It presents a unique and challenging environment in which responders must be aware of safety concerns, cultural challenges, language barriers, competing agendas, and political pitfalls, all within an emergency and disaster response system that operates with very strict command structures and regulations. In addition to the workshops, Katie and the response team will be traveling to surrounding villages that are still living without homes, adequate food, and warm clothes. Twenty percent of the funds earned will go towards purchasing warm clothes and food for local families.
