Our graduate paper was accepted at the International Institute for Restorative Practices in Belgium in May 2019! We've been working hard on our final graduate materials; contributing research and materials toward a community approach to healing trauma - in both individuals and collective trauma - for a Portland nonprofit. As conflict resolution practitioners, we recognize the importance of collaborative community support and that supportive relationships are critical to healing trauma-disrupted nervous systems and collective dysfunctions. However, this healing can't happen in a vacuum and our communities are often entrenched in systemic patterns of injustice, oppression, and stalled trauma, which can be an isolating experience.
A trauma doula supports people experiencing a trauma-disrupted nervous system during a transitional period of establishing their sense of safety and relational strength; like a birth doula would support a person experiencing pregnancy, labor, and delivery with nonclinical informational, emotional, and physical support. Our project supports the training of these trauma doulas and the development of a supportive organizational framework for those doing trauma doula work. Only a resourced, supported, and sturdy individual can affect this kind of healing in their community - but ANYONE can become this person if they have the support, knowledge, and accessible skills. This is a growth opportunity we are very excited about and confident in, and we believe a wider reach will strengthen the project even more.
Conference registration ($380), roundtrip flights ($600-700), train travel ($100), nourishment (~$100), and lodging ($330) will cost each of us about $1500, so we're aiming to cover those expenses. This means about $3000 to cover both of us as presenters - and we're a GREAT team.
So many people have supported us in our graduate school journeys so far by providing us with their own versions of informational, emotional, and, at times, physical support - a shoulder to cry on, a wrist or shoulder massage for our tired typists hands and scrunched up muscles, invitations to the yoga studio to get us away from computers...
We are so so so appreciative of any financial support you are able to share and we can assure you that we will not blow it all on Belgian waffles! It will be directly related to sharing this important framework for peace building and trauma healing!
