If you are reading this, you may know the woman pictured above. Her name is Josie Borel Mureddu and she is my mother.
On June 3rd 2020 after finding some unknown spots in her body, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia - a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood.
Doctors call AML “acute” because the condition can progress rapidly. The term “leukemia” refers to cancers of the bone marrow and blood cells. The word myeloid, or myelogenous, refers to the cell type it affects.
When a person has AML, the myeloid cells mutate and form leukemic blasts. These cells don’t function as normal cells do. They can keep the body from making normal, healthy cells.
In order to treat this desease she will require several rounds of a type of chemo therapy known as Mydostaurin. The commercial name of the medicine is RYDAPT.
RYDAPT is an oral prescription medicine used in combination with certain chemotherapy medicines to treat adults with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who have a defect in a gene called FLT3.
Each box of Rydapt is about 13,000 USD and she will need to take many rounds of this medicine to have a fighting chance against this desease.
She will also need to go through a bone marrow transplant which will have an avg. cost of 60,000 USD.
This is on top of all the other costs associated with treating a desease as strong as this one, in a country (Mexico City) that does not cover this type of treatment under their public healthcare system.
