Healthcare cost for Susy Oliveros
Much of Susana's life she was provider, a care taker, a teacher. She raised four daughters by herself while going to school and working several jobs as a middle school and high school science teacher. She did so with a positive attitude, an enduring faith and belief in God, and a welcoming heart to everyone who came into her path. Over the last ten years she has faced a new challenge - amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), otherwise known as Lou Gherig's disease. It has been a challenge for her to slowly lose muscle control. First the ability to walk, then the ability to grasp things, and finally the ability to speak. And as her disease has progressed she has even lost the ability to eat, resulting in having a feeding tube placed a few years ago. With each stage of her progression though Susy has done her best to keep an optimistic view of life.
To rally to her side during this time of trial has been her four daughters. Megan and Heankel took care of Susy while they were each finishing High School. Daphne first moved back to Monterrey to help take care of Susy upon completing College. And Tavhata soon brought both Daphne and Susy to live with her and her husband in Houston so that she could help take on the financial and physical burden of caring for Susy. One of the biggest blessing in this has been the technology that has helped to improve Susy's quality of life - much of which was either lent them by the ALS Association of Houston or covered by the insurance she was finally able to purchase after becoming a US resident in 2019. Through all of this, Susy and her family has done their best to be self-sufficient and to pool their resources in order to take care of Susy. But now they need your help.
As Susy now has health insurance she has a greater need to leave the house to go to appointments. Often times Daphne is the only one available to take her to these appointments (due to the fact that everyone else in the family is working full time), but currently the vehicle they have and the wheel chair they have are not ideal for this. To this point, Susy and her family are trying to raise money to purchase an electric wheel chair and a modified van to transport the wheel chair, as it cannot be loaded into a standard SUV or van. A single ride from a transport service can be over $350. We are hoping to raise the funds before Easter and we need your help. Please, will you help us?
Update: If we are unable to reach our goals we will use the funds to help pay for Susy's other medical costs. Thank you again for your support.
