Why Music Heals Exists?
We find ourselves in a developing country where the level of poverty is high. Sierra Leone has faced significant challenges over the years, including a decade-long civil war, poverty, social inequality, inadequate access to education, Ebola outbreak, COVID-19, and the recent drug abuse outbreak. The negative effects of these events on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of individuals have been substantial. According to data from the World Bank in 2018, the poverty rate in Sierra Leone was 59.1%.
The percentage of people living below one USD dollar per day was 56.5% in 2018. The average income earner works US$23 per month. According to a UNICEF report from 2019, there were over 4,000 street children in Sierra Leone. At that time, approximately only 5% of this statistic knew the theoretical aspect of music. This is a manifestation of the fact that poor people don’t enroll their children in music classes. As a multi-talented team, we have decided to provide 100% free music courses for vulnerable children and youths for empowerment. This will provide them access to making music.
What We Do:
Music Heals teaches music, dance, and mentorship. The organization supports inmates by paying bail fines and providing instruments and equipment for proficient students, prisons, and charity homes. Furthermore, it provides music trainers, feeding, studio recording, and health care items to charity homes and prisons.
Music Heals works with vulnerable children and young people, such as street children, victims of domestic violence, orphans, and commercial sex workers. Instead of reaching out to all, Music Heals extends its services to the physically challenged, survivors of gender-based violence, and victims of natural and artificial disasters. An international music certificate is awarded to advanced students to ensure their music career is pursued.
**Music Heals is a registered and verified National NGO in Freetown, Sierra Leone, supported by International and National persons who have seen Music Heals' impact firsthand.**
