Transform Healthcare in Kenya: Help Medic Outpost Save Lives
Tax deductible
According to UNICEF, 64,500 children die in Kenyan provinces prior to reaching the age of five. Most of these deaths are a result of preventative causes, and roughly 3/4 of these deaths occur prior to the child's first birthday. The most vulnerable groups are those living in underdeveloped and rural areas, which are drastically more susceptible to disease and malnutrition.
To this, we must take a stand, together. The developing world has long been ravaged by conflict, famine, and inadequate healthcare, especially in rural areas. Countless adults and children die each day from preventable injury and illness. Medical care in remote regions is scarce, and the health programs that do exist are understaffed and limited in resources and expertise. Medic Outpost is improving traditional healthcare in remote areas by training community members to be first responders, augmenting health workers’ skills and knowledge base, and providing life-saving equipment.
It is essential that we empower communities to be responsible for their own healthcare through education and support. We are committed to providing the best emergency care training for remote communities and equipping them with the tools and resources necessary to meet basic healthcare needs.
The rural provinces of Kenya have been at the forefront of our mission. Medic Outpost projects in Africa are focused on supporting local, rural, remote communities in their efforts to develop and provide healthcare to their people. While the needs of the communities we equip and train are diverse, their goals are similar – to ensure access to quality, life-saving medical care. In addition to rural communities Medic Outpost Africa works in poor neighborhoods on the outskirts of Nairobi to bring critical treatment and training to primary school children and school staff. Our goal is to treat all young children for parasites and vitamin deficiencies that affect physical and mental development. We believe that schools should be a safe haven for the young. Training teachers and equipping schools with emergency equipment is the best way to keep children safe.
One of our primary methods of aid has been through our Afya kids project. Afya means “health” in Swahili. The Afya Kids project began in the slums of Nairobi. Medic Outpost Africa is focusing on attacking intestinal parasites and vitamin deficiencies that plague small children in resource poor communities. To date we have treated over 10,000 primary school children ages 6 months to 12 years old. Our programs include education in hygiene, preventative health, and Afya Kids first aid training. To date we have trained over 6,000 children in health programs including our first aid program. Girls 5 to 9 years old are most often the primary caregivers to their younger brothers and sisters in poor communities. Providing appropriate emergency training to these children is saving countless lives.
Through this program, over 30,000 young children in Kenya have been taught critical first aid skills so as to empower the communities of rural Kenya and Kenyan youth to take charge of their own healthcare. Looking to the most vulnerable, over 40,000 Kenyan children surrounding the poverty stricken slums of Nairobi have been treated for viral intestinal worms by Medic Outpost, a disease that can be fatal if left unchecked.
Our mission is not just to save lives, but to empower and teach rural and impoverished communities to learn to sustain and improve their own health care, so as to ensure the success and prosperity of future generations. But this is not a mission that can be carried out by us alone. We humbly look to your own kindness and generosity to aid us in our mission to empower and teach, so that one day we may live in a more equal and prosperous world where everyone has the right to take charge of their own healthcare, and lead meaningful and fulfilling lives in Kenya and beyond.
In the words of our Regional Director in Africa, Sarah Magenda:
“The the future of Africa lies in the health and education of it’s impoverished youth”
