Transatlanticism: A Circus Tribute

Friends, family, strangers, co-workers, and the greater circus community, we reach out today with the intention to turn a dream into reality. Constructive Interference is a contemporary circus company created by The Circus Project alumni, Eliana, Mara, Meghan, and Sequoia. The four of us met in Portland, OR during our time in the Elements Training Company in 2021/2022. During this program we discovered our shared passion of creating ensemble circus.

Our group is diverse in age, Identities, origins, and interests, from a national gymnastics champion, to a former Washington, DC government relations expert, however we all share the love of circus arts. After crafting our (sold out!) culminating show [un]raveling last spring, we knew we wanted to keep creating art together, and the proven ability to create a moving original show. Since June 2021, we’ve been dreaming of producing a circus show that embraces what we love about circus, and now we have a north star! Transatlanticism: A Circus Tribute will be our first production and we are really stoked that it is happening! We envision this show as a celebration set to the album of the same name created by Death Cab for Cutie, which turns 20 years old in 2023. (Any fans? We hope so! ) However, we can’t do it alone; we’ve assembled an incredibly talented cast, and now we need your support to help put our show on stage this summer!

For us, circus is more than doing incredible flips in the air or pirouettes on the ground. It is a catalyst, a lifejacket, a safe place where we can be our true, authentic selves Circus allows us to be vulnerable on stage, share emotional experiences with the audience, connect over our shared humanity, while as circus artists, embrace our physical strengths that we’ve extensively trained and developed to tell stories in our own engaging, and awe-inspiring way. With this project we strive to refine and deepen our relationship with our art and with our community. We have so many stories to tell and cannot wait to share them with you!

The songs on the record Transatlanticism explore themes of love and emotional separation and use intentionally ambient and sparse instrumentals to further this theme. Merging these elements with a variety of ensemble aerial, juggling, and acrobatics, this contemporary show will focus on the platonic love and friendship of a group of friends celebrating, reminiscing, and telling stories together. In parallel with the themes of the album, this show will reunite the core group of artists that make up Constructive Interference. Those still working and living in Portland, and Eliana who has spent the year in full-time professional circus school across the country. We are THRILLED at the interest and commitments we’ve gotten from the Portland circus community so far. Our incredible cast includes emerging artists whose dynamism you won’t want to miss in partnership with experienced veterans of the Portland circus scene who will knock your socks off with their versatility and artistry.

The funds from this GoFundMe will help us pay for rehearsal space, a performance venue and associated costs, costumes, props, marketing materials, and compensation to those hired for the project.

Transatlanticism: A Circus Tribute, is going to be launched in June 2023! And we are already dreaming of taking it on tour in the Pacific Northwest.
