Mike and Deborah’s Transatlantic Balloon Challenge
In June 2022, blind veteran Mike Scholes and his partner Deborah Day will fly a specially built Rozier balloon from Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada non-stop to Europe. The challenge is for Deborah to become the first female to captain a balloon flight across the Atlantic and for Mike to be the first registered blind crew member to make the crossing. It is also designed to raise the profile of Blind Veterans UK, a charity that has supported Mike since 2008.
Deborah and Mike have collected or been promised lots of equipment and help but still need more contributions to get their dream "off the ground". A full list of equipment and services still required can be provided.
Mike served as a pilot in the Royal Navy and flew gliders before taking up ballooning. He has set five British duration records amongst many other achievements and was presented with the Royal Aero Club Bronze Medal by HRH The Duke of York in 2007.
Although Deborah will be the captain, Mike, who lost his sight in 2007, will monitor the flight while she sleeps using a specially designed talking computer.
If successful, Guinness World Records will recognise the flight. Would you like to help make this flight a success?
So far, Mike & Deborah have self-funded the flight, but have been hit with unexpected costs so any help will be appreciated. For example, businesses can display their names on fuel tanks, visible in photos, for £1,000 or on sandbags carried for £100.
