Minnesota is a trans refuge state. But legal protections are only one part of what people need to build a safe and sustainable life.

Tea Time is a Minneapolis-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit created by and for trans people. We are raising $50,000 to help open and operate a volunteer-run Trans Resource Center in Minneapolis for one full year.

Trans people in Minnesota regularly face challenges finding stable housing, employment, healthcare, transportation, social connection, and other essential resources. People moving to Minnesota may also arrive without established community networks or knowledge of where to turn for help.

We want to create a physical place where trans people can walk in and know they belong.

What would the Trans Resource Center provide?

The center would serve as a welcoming community home base where trans people could:

- Build friendships and community

- Connect with housing, employment, healthcare, legal, transportation, and basic-needs resources

- Attend community gatherings and educational programs

- Participate in skill-sharing and other activities

- Learn about services offered by organizations throughout Minnesota

- Meet other trans people in a welcoming, community-centered environment

The center would not replace the important work already being done by healthcare providers, housing organizations, legal services, and LGBTQ+ nonprofits.

It would help people find those resources, navigate them, and build community around them.

Tea Time is already doing the work

Tea Time currently organizes community gatherings, educational activities, outings, resource navigation, and larger community events.

Our 2026 community survey received 66 responses and identified employment, housing, access to resources, and social connection as important needs within our community.

We have also organized events and outreach throughout Minneapolis, including Trans Prom, People's Pride outreach, community gatherings, karaoke, game nights, and community outings.

The Trans Resource Center would give this growing work a permanent home.

What will $50,000 support?

Our goal is intended to help cover one year of a volunteer-run center, including:

- Rent and occupancy expenses

- Utilities

- Insurance

- Furniture and basic equipment

- Program and community supplies

- Accessibility and safety needs

- Resource and outreach materials

- Other operating expenses needed to maintain the space

This initial goal does not include paid staff. We are raising money for the physical space and infrastructure needed to establish the center.

This is bigger than Minneapolis

The forces causing trans people to reconsider where they can safely live do not stop at Minnesota's borders.

That is why we are asking people not only in Minnesota, but across the United States and around the world, to help strengthen the communities providing refuge.
