Last night, one of my oldest and closest friends - Cary Jerome - lost everything in a house fire. He is physically ok, however all his possessions were destroyed.
For many of you who know Cary and I from high school, he had been living in that house for decades and it was full of so many amazing memories. I was lucky enough to live there for about 10 years, and they were some of the best years of my life. So many amazing moments of love, growth, laughter, adventure and inspiration. I am still in shock about how so much history can go up in smoke so quickly :( it's a tough pill to swallow and the focus now is moving forward.
For those of you who have only met Cary once or twice, he's an amazingly talented, compassionate, thoughtful, and loving person who always puts others before himself. His endless love and support for those around him is a rare thing in this world, and I'm eternally grateful to call him a friend. My heart hurts for his loss, and so I'm reaching out to you all for support.
It's so hard to put a price on years of memories and accumulated possessions, and even now I'm wondering what is considered 'enough' to rebuild a life from scratch. If you are able to help in any way, please do.
Money is only part of the rebuilding process, however it's an important and necessary one. It's unclear how quickly Cary will be able to find a new place to stay and luckily he has a strong and robust support system in SF. That said, the faster we provide financial support the easier it will be for him to find his footing again.
If you're unable to offer money, that's totally understandable. It's likely Cary will need so much more than that - clothes, toiletries, props, a massage table, food, friendship, etc. - all the things that constitute a life. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you're able to offer other forms of support, so we can coordinate about meeting Cary's needs whatever they may be in the moment.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me directly.
Thank you for your time, love and support - it means a lot to me, and I'm sure to Cary as well <3
