A Tragic Loss on Bliss Road, Saint Johnsville, NY

First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for taking the time to read this message. Last night, my son, Johnny A. Smith, experienced an unimaginable loss when a devastating house fire took everything he owned. The fire broke out at 10:41 p.m. while Johnny was at work. Although three volunteer fire departments responded quickly, they were sadly unable to save his home.

Johnny lost not only his home and belongings, but also two cherished companions—his dogs, Corbella Lynn and Ryder. Corby and Ryder were much more than pets to him; they were his family. Johnny went out of his way to make them special meals and organized his day around them, caring for them as if they were his children. His heartbreak is even deeper because he was also dog-sitting his friend Amanda’s beloved dog, Zoey, who was lost in the fire as well.

As you can imagine, this is an incredibly difficult time for Johnny and our family. Johnny is not the kind of person who asks for help easily; he has worked hard for everything he’s ever had. Yet, right now, he needs support.

Unfortunately, Johnny’s homeowner’s insurance does not cover this tragedy, and with the American Red Cross stretched thin due to the ongoing wildfires in the Catskills, their resources are limited. Johnny has some savings, which he’s dedicating to cremating Corby and Ryder, as well as replacing his diabetic medication and a few other essentials he lost.

Our family has been so touched by the outpouring of condolences, as well as by friends who’ve come forward with clothing and essentials to help him through these first few days. To those who have already reached out—thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your kindness means the world to Johnny.

At this time, we’re hoping for additional help from our wonderful community, friends, and family. Johnny could use support in clearing the damaged structure, including assistance with heavy equipment to remove debris. Items like clothing, food, blankets, and personal necessities would also be immensely helpful. If you’re unable to donate time but would like to help in another way, monetary donations or gift cards would be deeply appreciated.

Any businesses or organizations willing to donate time, equipment, or items are encouraged to reach out. I, Leona Smith, Johnny’s mother, am handling communications and donations, so please feel free to reach out.

Please know that any support—big or small—is appreciated, and there’s absolutely no pressure to help. We understand that these are challenging times for everyone. Thank you for considering our family in your thoughts.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Leona Smith
