G.P.F.C Traditional Healing Garden
A Traditional Healing Garden is coming to Grande Prairie, and it needs your support!
The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre is excited to announce that work is underway to complete the garden this year. The garden will commemorate Residential School Survivors, their families, and community while working towards programming and usage that leads to transformative and healing change in our community. This project, which has been in the planning stages for more than a year, but in the dreams of the centre for much longer, is very timely.
As our country mourns the children of residential schools, especially the 215 whose remains were discovered on the grounds of the Kamloops Residential School in the community of Tk’emlúps te Secweìpemc, as well as confirmation of unmarked gravesites at residential schools in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, it is imperative that our grief guides us in active change and healing.
The traditional garden, which will house programs alongside commemorative events to revitalize traditional knowledge systems, provide skill-building, and host community healing events, creates a small path forward in our community towards reconciliation and healing.
All money raised will go towards the following:
- Building a Greenhouse to address food instability, scarcity, and sustainability in our community
- Garden boxes to grow traditional medicines & herbs
- Materials for pathways
- Benches & Gathering Area for Ceremonies
- Trees
- Ongoing Maintenance
