Casey's Campaign Against Cancer
Casey McQuillan is 20 years old, a rising junior at Amherst College, and is now fighting cancer. This summer, while interning at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., Casey went to the E.R. with stomach pains and was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), which is a type of blood cancer. The doctors prescribed Gleevec, a medication that successfully puts 98% of CML patients into cytogenetic remission.
Unfortunately, Casey belongs to the 2% of CML patients who develop resistance to this medication. After only a month of treatment and a week into his fall semester at Amherst, this became apparent as rogue cancer cells caused lesions to form in his bones and pain so severe and so debilitating that he needed to be hospitalized at Dana Farber/Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He spent the next 23 days in the hospital and lost 35 pounds during this time; by the time he left, he had become so weak that he could only get around with the help of a walker. His leukemia progressed from an early phase to blast crisis phase in a few weeks, and his aggressive cancer was a singular event for the leukemia specialists at Dana Farber.
Nowadays, Casey is recovering at home, getting stronger, and preparing for a bone marrow transplant scheduled in the very near future. Both of his parents, who have also gone through their own battles with cancer in the last two years, have made great efforts and sacrifices to be by his side during the recovery time.
Casey is battling cancer with tremendous courage; however, to some degree, we can all imagine the physical, mental, and emotional challenges Casey must confront on a daily basis. He was supposed to be at college, furthering his education and having fun with his friends. He was even elected to the Amherst Chamber of Commerce to work on a long-term project of his focused on community development in the local area. Instead, he is at home now, focusing on just getting better.
We know Casey still has many strengths, and our financial support would help both him and his family experience a little less stress during these trying times. His family has always shown generosity; the McQuillan family selflessly raised money for impoverished Nicaraguans by hosting an event at their home in Westwood for 10 years straight. Now, we would like to lend our support to Casey, Pat, Jody, and brother Ries. They are most deserving. Please support this fund.
