My name is Grace Jeanpierre. I am a senior at William C. Overfelt High School. I discovered a love for math and science when I was in third grade and have wanted to be an engineer since I was eleven. So, I was very excited when I was accepted to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with an electrical engineering major. However, the financial aid I received will fall far short of what I need to get there.
I have passed all four of the Advanced Placement exams I've taken thus far (European History, U.S. History, English Language, and Calculus AB). This year, I am taking Calculus BC, Physics 1, and English Literature. I have a 4.0 gpa (unweighted) and will be one of my class's valedictorians. I also was the number one golfer on Overfelt's championship boys varsity team for all four years of high school. I am not afraid of challenges and hard work.
Going off to college and living on my own is scary enough, but I will also be solely responsible for paying for my college education. The thought of taking on such a huge debt is frightening, but I have worked so hard to get this far. Cal Poly SLO is my dream school. I cannot NOT do everything possible to get there. So I am currently working part-time at a golf course. Plus, this summer, I will be an intern at Stanford University. The stipend I receive will go toward my college expenses. And, I have applied for several scholarships. But even if I am awarded them, they will only cover a small fraction of what I need. Therefore, I am asking you to have faith in me by donating to my college fund.
I am no stranger to hard work, and I know that I have the confidence and the abilitiy to compete and succeed in a field dominated by men. My ultimate goal is to get my graduate degree in electrical engineering, to be a role model to young women who may have dreams of becoming an engineer but have shied away from the mathematics involved. I want them to see that with hard work and perseverance and a healthy dose of confidence, they, too, can succeed.
