The Free Little Library on 14th Project
Hi, we are Stephanie Dahle-Adams and Haley Herbst, Logan Circle- Shaw residents, and we feel everyone deserves easy access to a good book. We’re looking to improve the neighborhood by providing a Free Little Library at the corner of 14th and N in Washington, D.C.
What is a Free Little Library?
They are a small structure, usually placed outside, where people are invited to take or leave a book. We are planning on purchasing a simple model (which can be found above) which includes an additional shelf with larger space for children's books.
Why 14th Street?
While no official statistics exist, we consider this area to be in a library desert. Both the Shaw and MLK library are a long walk or bus ride away, especially for children.
Why Luther Place Memorial Church as a location specifically?
We think Luther Place's location is uniquely situated within the 14th Street community. Across from N Street Village, down the street from a building with a large number of school-age children, near a bus stop, on a major cross street — and with adequate space and outdoor lighting.
What does this cost?
The cost for the pre-built Free Little Library, post, plaque and shipping is $511. We plan on rounding that number up to raise a total of $600 to start the library off with some books (including several in Spanish).
