Alan and Kathy Lujan Smith Family Recovery Fund

We would like to share the tragic story of what happened to our sister and her family,  Kathy and Alan Smith and their two beautiful daughters.  The Smith Family lives in Plymouth Township, Michigan.  This loving family picked up their oldest daughter from work, went out to dinner, and arrived back home to the smell of burning lumber. It is not uncommon to smell burning wood in their area, so this was not initially alarming.  As they got closer to the front door, Alan realized that their house was on fire, and the entire home was engulfed in flames. Alan and Kathy were very blessed that they did not get caught in the back draft.  Everyone was unharmed; however the family lost  everything including their beloved pets:  2 dogs, four cats and 2 turtles.
     The saddest part of the story is that Kathy’s cherished dog, Toby Copper, was still alive waiting by the door for them to come home. Kathy attempted life saving measures, but to no avail; Toby died in Kathy’s arms.  The other animals that perished in the fire were rescue animals. The Smith Family was known to share to their lives and love with all animals. They walked away with only the clothes on their back, and the insurance policy does not begin to cover the loss. The only items the fire did not take were Kathy's wedding ring, a heirloom necklace, and Kathy's Mater Dei High School Diploma #Mater Dei Monarchs.  We are asking for $15,000 to assist the Smith Family with renting living space, and setting up a home while they rebuild their lives.
