Phyllis the 2 month old emu was hatched ready to run! Within a couple of days she could run almost as fast as me, and loved it, jumping around and playing with the dogs. A few days ago, when I let her out of her pen, her left leg was completely rotated out at the knee, and she could barely walk! She had sustained an unknown injury that now allows her to move (very slowly) only with the help of a harness, and she is very depressed. Although I am a veterinarian, this injury is far too involved to be repaired by anyone other than a highly specialized orthopedic surgeon. Being a two-legged animal, she needs both legs to be fully functional in order to live. Without specialized surgery and extensive rehab, her quality of life would be incredibly poor. Due to the cost of the procedure, I need help! If I can raise enough funds to go forward with surgery, I will post lots of updates!
