What we are fundraising for:
We are raising funds to produce a book proposal for a collaborative cookbook, featuring recipes to waste less by chefs and their inspirations. “Kin-spiration”, as it will be called, refers to that special person in our lives who inspired us to cook. Expect stories of beloved family, neighbours, and friends, diverse recipes, and a heap of home food waste tips!

Who are we:
We are the Kin-spiration group; 28 chefs and a behind-the-scenes team, founded by zero-waste, queer, migrant chef Fatima “Fatti” Tarkleman. We are all people of colour, and women or outside the gender binary. Our ethos is to put care, sustainability and diversity at the centre of our food work. Our chef collaborators are pastry chefs, food justice activists, retreat chefs, prison education chefs, food stylists, and food workshop facilitators to name but a few!

What the book will be like:
The reader will be able to look up food that may otherwise have ended up in the bin, and find diverse ideas on how to give them a new lease of life! Our chef collaborators have created a recipe with their Kin-spiration person, using ingredients from a list of the top 10 most wasted in the UK kitchen (WRAP 2022). There will be food waste tips throughout the book, even giving ideas on what to do with any leftover ingredients from the recipes themselves. The chefs will tell the stories behind their recipes, that connect them and their Kin-spiration person; stories of community, triumph, nourishment, adversity, heritage, belonging and love. There will be beautiful portraits of the chefs and their Kin-spirations, stunning illustrations, and drool-worthy shots of the food itself.

Why we are making the cookbook:
In the UK, 70% of UK food waste (post-farm gate) comes from households, equivalent to a value of over £14 billion a year and 20 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions” (WRAP 2022) There is a wealth of untapped knowledge in POC communities around sustainability and preventing home food waste, and we want to share this valuable knowledge! We want to share our personal recipes with you while taking you on an exciting journey around the world via our chefs’ home kitchens and personal stories.

Cheffing is notoriously bad at gender and racial diversity, so we are using this book to carve out that space for ourselves, and tell these untold stories in our own words. We want to inspire people of colour to become chefs, showing the variety of workplaces we exist and creating greater visibility for POC chefs. We want to centre care in the book as an antidote to a food landscape that can be, frankly, a bit brutal!

How much we’re looking for:
We are fundraising £8k for the development stages of the book; the book proposal and publicity. This includes writing and editing, consultants, portrait and food photography, illustrations, design, recruitment, subsistence, and recipe development. We will be proposing the book to Unbound.com who is a crowdfunding publisher, so the success of this GoFundMe campaign will very likely influence their decision to sign us. If we are able to raise £10k we will be able to create a beautiful, impactful video trailer to go to Unbound with the cookbook proposal, and to use on our social media platforms. If you are, or know of, a corporate sponsor who would be interested in supporting us please send us a message.
