Raising Funds for SPI

Hello everyone!
We’re Marta and Robert, the long-term travelers behind the travel blog The Passport Memorandum.
What’s this fundraiser for?
As many of you know, a civil war started in Syria about 7 years ago. Since then, 5 million people have fled their homes in Syria to escape war-ridden areas, and over 6 million have left to other parts of Syria to attempt to live normal lives. The situation in Syria has been labeled the “biggest humanitarian emergency of our era,” and it requires worldwide attention and support.
This year Robert and I decided we would do whatever we could to help, no matter how small it may be in the grand scheme of things. And, about a month ago, we discovered Small Projects Istanbul and immediately wanted to get involved.
What’s Small Projects Istanbul?
Small Projects Istanbul (SPI) is an grassroots NGO located in Istanbul that helps nearly 300 displaced Syrian refugees, with nearly half of them being kids. SPI gives all of these families the chance to create a new life in Turkey, offering any necessary support in the process.
What do they do?
SPI is open 7 days a week, doing everything they can to offer the displaced Syrian community in Istanbul continuous support: language courses, activities, food, psychological support (such as for PTSD), workshops, etc.
Here are some examples of what SPI uses donated funds for:
$20: Covers one week of healthy snacks for 115+ kids at the center.
$40: Pays for one kid's primary school tuition (one semester).
$150: The costs of running all of SPI's programs for one month.
$500: Funds required to develop a dental care program for the refugees.
Furthermore, in the past years they’ve worked diligently to bring "Muhra" to life, a social enterprise that helps over 60 women to personally make and sell products like earrings, bags, clothes, and more. This is an amazing project that empowers women to be able to provide for themselves and their families. They are already selling locally, and very soon their website will be up and running! https://muhra.org/

First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this, and possibly even considering contributing to this cause in anyway – whether that’s telling someone about this, sharing it online, or donating $2.
SPI doesn’t receive any funding from the government, so they need all the international support they can get to help these displaced families integrate into society. That’s why we’ve created this campaign: to share the amazing and inspiring work that SPI does, and to ask you to be a part of it.
A small gesture on your part can change someone’s life.
This campaign will run until the 17th of August. After it concludes, we will be transferring all of the money raised to SPI immediately.
Then, we’ll be visiting SPI at the end of August and sharing on a daily basis what this organization through our blog and social media platforms. We’ll be keeping all of you posted throughout this campaign and after!

¿Para qué es esta campaña de donación?
Como muchos de vosotros sabéis, hace ya 7 años que comenzó la guerra civil en Siria. Desde entonces, más de 5 millones de personas han huido de sus hogares en Siria para escapar de las zonas más perjudicadas por la guerra, y más de 6 millones de personas han abandonado ciertas partes del país para intentar tener una vida normal. La situación en Siria ha sido nombrada como la “mayor emergencia humanitaria de nuestra era” y requiere atención y apoyo de todo el mundo.
Este año Robert y yo decidimos que haríamos lo que pudiéramos para ayudar a esta causa. Hace un mes, descubrimos Small Projects Istanbul e inmediatamente quisimos involucrarnos en este proyecto.
¿Qué es Small Projects Istanbul?
Small Projects Istanbul (SPI) es una ONG localizada en Estambul que ayuda a casi 300 refugiados sirios desplazados, donde casi la mitad de ellos son niños. SPI ofrece a todas estas familias la oportunidad de crear una nueva vida en Turquía, facilitando todo el apoyo necesario durante el proceso.
¿Cuál es el trabajo de esta organización?
SPI abre los 7 días de la semana, haciendo todo lo posible para ofrecer a la comunidad siria en Estambul apoyo continuo: cursos de idiomas, apoyo psicológico (como casos con Síndrome de Estrés Postraumático), talleres, actividades, comida, etc.
Para que puedas hacerte una idea de lo que las donaciones pueden hacer por ellos, aquí tenemos algunos ejemplos:
$20: una semana de snacks saludables para los +115 niños del centro.
$40: un semestre de matrícula en la escuela primaria.
$150: un mes de ejecución de todos los programas de Small Project Istanbul.
$500: el desarrollo de un programa de cuidado dental.
Además, en los últimos años han trabajado intensamente para darle vida a Muhra, una empresa con fin social que ayuda a más de 60 mujeres a fabricar y vender productos como pendientes, bolsos, ropa, etc. Este es un proyecto increíble que permite a las mujeres de esta comunidad mantener a sus familias. Ya se están vendiendo localmente, ¡y muy pronto su página web estará en funcionamiento! https://muhra.org/
¿Por qué deberías ayudar?
Ante todo, queremos agradecerte que te hayas tomado el tiempo de leer esto y que consideres contribuir a esta causa de cualquier forma, ya sea contándoselo a tu familia o amigos, compartiéndolo en tus redes sociales o donando 2 euros.
SPI no recibe ningún financiamiento del gobierno, por lo que necesitan todo el apoyo internacional que puedan obtener para ayudar a estas familias a seguir integrándose en la sociedad turca. Es por eso que hemos creado esta campaña: para compartir el trabajo inspirador que hace Small Projects Istanbul, y para pedirte que seas parte de este maravilloso proyecto.
Un pequeño gesto de tu parte puede cambiar la vida de alguien más.
Esta campaña estará activa hasta el 17 de agosto. Una vez concluya, enviaremos todo el dinero recaudado a SPI inmediatamente.
