I’m Corey, Karen’s oldest son and I’m posting this on the behalf of our family to help our Mom regain her quality of life. Below is a story of the battle she’s endured this past year.

Karen was a regular 64-year-old, living in the ‘golden’ years. She loves travelling with her husband, Fred, to some of their dream destinations, as well as to visit her 4 grandchildren across Canada.

On April 29, 2023 her future would begin to change forever. She was attending her granddaughter’s birthday party, a few days later she was admitted to the hospital trying to breathe fighting for her life on a ventilator. While her Doctors ran numerous tests to try and determine what the reason was for her rapid decline in health, the Hospital’s Reasearch Team was also intimately involved in.

The next three weeks were spent in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), followed by an additional three months in hospital.

She was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Pneumonia which attributed to Interstitial Lung Disease, needing multiple medications and supplemental oxygen 24/7.

This has also put a lot of stress on her husband, Fred, for the day to day tasks such as meal prepping, housekeeping, grocery shopping, driving to and from the numerous doctor appointments.

The only option for Karen to survive this Disease is to undergo a double lung transplant. Testing has already begun for this major operation.

Transplant will take place in Edmonton which is a 2.5-hour drive away from our home. We will spend approximately 3-5 months following the transplant surgery in Edmonton. We are asking for assistance to cover costs for medication, secondary accommodation, and other unexpected expenses as we begin this transplant journey.

Karen will not survive without it.
