Olympe de Gouges (1748-1793) was a French revolutionary playwright, abolitionist, champion of women’s rights, and ultimate victim of the reign of terror. Her story though not well known is one that is becoming increasingly relevant in our own febrile and divided age. A flawed yet heroic character Olympe was at once compassionate and unshakeable in her principles, showing exceptional courage in the face of genuine existential threat.
Inspired by her extraordinary life I began writing “Toxicodindron: the trials of Olympe de Gouges”. in 2016. Since then it has undergone various iterations until finally landing as a full length play. My aim now is to present a version of the piece rehearsed over 6 days to a theatre industry audience as well as invitees from the public, in Edinburgh on Nov 7th 2025 (details tbc). The Creative Scotland Individual Fund has already agreed to contribute some funds to this end which in itself bodes well for the future of the project. Even so, we need to raise a further £4000 in order ensure fair pay for all those involved - 5 actors, 5 crew. Olympe would expect no less.
Anyone who can contribute to this project in however small amount, will receive a link to register for a free ticket for the performance which will take place in Edinburgh on the afternoon of Friday Nov 7th (exact time and location to be confirmed). Due to potential limited space these will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
