Kacey and Daniel have faced more in the last two years than most people could in a lifetime. In 2023, at just 32 years old, Daniel went into heart and full kidney failure. Doctors told him that if he hadn’t gone to the ER that night, he wouldn’t have survived until morning. Since then, life has been a constant fight for survival.
Daniel began grueling dialysis treatments three days a week that took about 9 hours a day, which reduced the pressure around his heart. Kacey decided to complete a training program to perform his dialysis and become his caretaker so he could get treatment safely from home. However, Daniel had to undergo 4 different surgeries to place a port in his stomach because the doctors continuously placed it wrong.
Because Daniel is young, he would be at the top of the transplant list, however, doctors said his weight needed to come down. They prescribed Ozempic to help him lose weight so he could qualify for a kidney transplant, but they failed to adjust his insulin or monitor his blood sugar after removing his glucose device. This caused his blood sugar to plummet unexpectedly, leading to a major car accident that totaled his vehicle, broke several ribs, and sent him to the hospital via medi-flight.
3 months later, another setback hit when a blister on his toe turned into a serious bone infection. Doctors later admitted they failed to recognize the severity of the issue and that they had sent him home with the wrong antibiotic. This negligence led to 2 different surgeries and removing more of his toe than originally expected in order to completely clear the worsening bone infection.
Throughout all of this, Kacey has continued to work full-time. She works in Behavioral Health as a social worker; caring for others while carrying the emotional and financial weight of caring for Daniel (who cannot currently work) and his two kids. She has taken out multiple loans and accrued mass credit card debt to keep them afloat. Despite everything, much of which would tear couples apart, they have persevered all on their own. They have taken hit after hit and though they are not giving up, they are down and I admit, too prideful to ask for help. So I am doing it for them. I think there is help out there and people willing to lift some of the weight off their shoulders.
Your donation will help cover medical expenses, bills and the ongoing costs of treatment as Kacey continues to do all she can to support Daniel's fight for recovery and a life-saving kidney transplant.
Every dollar, no matter how much, or just sharing their story, would mean the world. Thank you
