Tow Truck Drive injured responding to a call

One of our tow truck drivers, Eugene Alls age 31 was responding to a single vehicle accident involving a truck pulling a trailer on Interstate 81 that had wrecked due to icy road conditions on Saturday morning, February 28 around 8 am.  He was first on scene in his personal vehicle and was standing next to the state troopers vehicle in his reflective clothing speaking with him waiting on our tow truck to arrive on scene. The trooper had already placed cones around the accident scene and had his emergency flashers on to warn motorists that there was an accident. VDOT also had a lane closure truck there so there was plenty of warning that there was an accident in that spot. A SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed when they lost control of their vehicle and slid across 3 lanes of traffic and hit the state troopers car. She was estimated at traveling at a speed of 65 on impact. The impact made the state car slam into the tow driver and when it bounced off threw him 25 feet in the air. The other tow drivers arrived on scene immediately after it happened, his injuries were stabilized as best as possible while waiting on EMS to arrive. Eugene was transported to the local hospital then transported to Roanoke Memorial where they are better equipped to handle his injuries. Eugene had one broken and one dislocated vertebrae in his neck, a bad wound to his abdomen and injuries to his left knee. He was very lucky to have survived the impact. He had surgery on his neck Saturday night to repair the broken vertebrae and he will be in a neck brace for 3 month and have to go through physical therapy. We are thankful he is on the road to recovery, but that road will be a long one. He also had developed blood clots in his leg that will have to be fixed. He will be out of work for awhile and bills unfortunately do not stop coming in. He has a fiancé and 3 children from a previous marriage. He will need all the help he can get.
