Many of you are already familiar with Trace’s story, but for those that aren’t, in 2019 Trace was diagnosed with a very rare degenerative neurological condition called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). He underwent gene therapy, where his own stem cells were used for a non-traditional bone marrow transplant.
The Thompson family uprooted their lives and moved to Minneapolis for roughly 6 months for treatment and post-treatment care. For the most part, Trace has done pretty well over the past 5 years, while still being closely monitored by the doctors in Minnesota.
Sadly, 5 years after his “life saving treatment”, this family received the devastating news that Trace has been diagnosed with MDS or “pre-leukemia”. He will require chemotherapy and a traditional bone marrow transplant, which carries its own risks.
While there are still many unknowns as to what this journey will entail, we do know that Trace will be heading back to Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis in the next few weeks for at least 4-5 months, assuming everything goes as planned.
Many have asked how they can help and now that we have more answers and a treatment plan, we have set up this GoFundMe page. This funding will be used to offset unexpected costs resulting from a temporary relocation for Britany such as living expenses in Tallahassee and Minnesota, travel expenses, and any leave from work. We would love to take some of the financial burden off of her so she can focus on Trace and his healing. If you know Britany, she is not one to accept help easily, but I know she is truly grateful for everyone’s support and prayers.
Please follow Trace’s journey on Facebook at “Tough as Trace”. If you feel led to give, I know this family would truly appreciate it, they’ve been through so much!
