On January 20th, I learned of the murder of a climate activist in the United States. As fate would have it, just four days later, I discovered that this incredible person was a high school colleague of mine. I reached out to old friends to learn more about who they were and flew to Atlanta to better understand the cause they died fighting for.
The more I learned about their complex and inspiring story, the more I knew I had to turn this investigation into a work of art - a documentary. But I can't do it alone.

Synopsis:
"Tortuguita" is a soulful documentary that celebrates the life and legacy of Manuel Estaban Paez, a 26-year-old climate and social justice activist from Venezuela. Known as Manny or Tortuguita, they were brutally murdered while protesting against Cop City, a $90 billion training facility that threatens to destroy Atlanta's historic Weelaunee forest. Through the voices of Manny's loved ones, fellow activists, and community members, the film illuminates their journey from their childhood in Panama to their high school years in Egypt and final years in the United States. It also captures Manny's deep love for humanity and the earth, which drove their tireless efforts to fight for climate justice, human rights, and indigenous sovereignty. "Tortuguita" is a powerful tribute to a visionary activist who sought to change the world, and a call to action for those who seek to continue their work.
