Back in the Battle
Victoria “Torey” Johnson is 26 as of August 4th. She fought hard and snuffed out the first threat on her life in 2008. Twelve years ago, at the young age of 13, Torey was first diagnosed with a germinoma, a rare type of brain cancer. Torey endured brain surgery, intense chemotherapy and brain radiation. It was a grueling 8 months. She endured tremendous side effects, but rose above to finish high school, get a college degree and create an independent life in Andover, MA. While working for Visiting Nurses Association in fundraising, she rescued a cat named Odie. She has managed her daily regimens of 12 medications and injections, balancing work, family and fun. From the time she was a little girl, she has always been a “by myself” person, wanting to do things on her own, working hard to do so. She would often recoil at help with "by myself Mommy, by myself."
Her life for the last month has been a like a war zone. The enemy has returned. She has a recurrence, “a relapse,” of the original cancer in her spinal cord. She has had an 8 hour, major spinal cord surgery and relearned to walk, having assistance with her daily life skills of bathing and bathroom routines.
Torey is a fighter. She is a warrior, in an unfair battle that she will fight and fight hard. She needs our help. Heading into a second battle in a war for her life, she needs an army behind her.
COVID has impacted many resources for support for both housing and funding. Doctors have noted she will be out of work, on unpaid leave for at least six months. All treatments are 67 miles from home. There are many unknowns. What is known is that Torey will undergo an aggressive treatment regimen consisting of high dose chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and 6 weeks of radiation.
This is not a “by myself” battle, despite Torey’s willful independence. In spite of the long-term effects of her treatment, we have watched Torey grow into the bright, beautiful soul she is today. It is our time for Torey to hear and see our shouts of support and our cheers of rivalry against the injustice of a re-diagnosis. We ask for your prayers and words of encouragement as Torey begins this fight again! The goal of this GoFundMe page is to help reduce the financial stress of her diagnosis and treatment. She will be unable to work during her treatment and recovery, however, she still has bills to pay. Funds collected through this effort will help Torey and her family pay for bills incurred due to treatment. We thank you in advance for any and all help.
