Top Surgery for August Huerta
Donation protected
After a decade of deliberation and twenty years of discomfort, I've made the decision to get top surgery! I'm excited and scared and determined. And I'm financially insecure. I need to raise as much as I can for my $6,750 surgery fee.
I want to tell you something about who I am so you know who you're helping and why your help is so important to me.
My name is August Huerta. It's a name I chose. It's a vital name. As a trans person, something you learn along the journey is that granting yourself your own freedom is the only way to survive. Everyday, I have to be persistent and remind people of my true name and my true self. Now that I've decided to get top surgery, I have given myself a new freedom.
In 2016, with the help of the community, I was able to raise enough money to start testosterone. Maybe you were one of the people that helped me, and I thank you for your kindness!
I need your help again. I don't have any external financial help. I grew up pretty poor and my family still lives paycheck to paycheck, just at the edge. And with covid, they have even less resources. I'm also furloughed due to the pandemic.
Every trans person deserves to have medical access and relief from their dysphoria. I shouldn't have to earn this but I want to express how far I've come. I grew up in a poor chicano community. My childhood was difficult and everything depended on perseverance. Not only did I have to reckon with my trans identity, but I had to find love and security on my own. I went on to be the first person in my family to go to college. Eventually, I got my MFA from the University of Texas and I'm a writer living in Austin with my sweet partner, Josh. I don't give up! I'm going to find a way to get my surgery no matter what but any help is appreciated.
Most urgently, I need to pay my $750 deposit as soon as possible. Please consider donating. Thank you
