Tool/Toy Project

Hello all!
We are Maegan Icke and Rachel Jones-Jones, and we are excited to be raising money to take our project - 'Tool/Toy' - to the Oslo Architecture Triennale in September. We are two Welsh designers working in architecture and jewellery respectively, keen to explore the possibilities where our fields collide.

We are thrilled to have been invited to create a new set of pieces to show at the exhibition, but need a little help getting them there! In line with the Triennale’s theme of 'degrowth', we are designing and making a set of instruments to slow down your daily domestic routine by encouraging regular playful interactions with the Sun in the home.

Solar energy is the source of life. It is the origin of our wealth. It produces us, animates us, and can inspire our excess. Drawing from scientific and mythical ideas of the Sun, we approach the design and development of these Tool/Toys with a childlike wonder and curiosity, to find the potential for playful and engaging expenditure of time at home, and ultimately a collective sense of our place under our star.

Over the past few months we have been working hard to invent devices that engage every sense, and have come up with lots of curious ways to listen, touch, watch, meditate, navigate and dance with the sunshine and its effects. Our Tool/Toys are easily portable, and multiples will displayed in the library at the Triennale, that you can borrow and test yourselves around the city or in your home. These might include a shell that allows you to listen to warmth, a measuring stick that tells you what your body is up to, and a celebration of the arrival of sunlight to Earth. To find out more about the development of these creations check out our instagram!

We have thus far been successful in securing a generous contribution from the Triennale of 2000NOK (approx. £1800) towards the provision of workshop space. However, despite lots of positive feedback, we have been unable to secure other funding to help us to nail the manufacturing and ensure it gets to the museum on time!

The bulk of the money we raise will go towards facilities we need to finish the making process, as well as sourcing materials, and postage and packaging for their journey to Oslo. As many of you know, we are incredibly excited about this project and where we might take it in the future. We can’t wait to see these devices come to life, and to share them with you in (hopefully) sunny Oslo.

Thank you for all your support!
