The Tookie Foundation

On Thursday 12th March 2015 I sat in a waiting room with my best friend to hear the words from the doctor you thought you would never hear.
You have Cancer.
My best friend who is 28 years old sat wide eyed with a slight blush in her cheeks and uttered the words back "ok" like someone just asked if she would like a bag of jelly beans.
I gripped my hands so tight trying not to scream whilst  the tears covered my entire face.
Tookie took one look at me when the doctor said "are you ok" and I flew into her arms while we cried and cried.
We walked into the waiting room where I excused myself into the washroom, where I asked the ceilings above "why" I had to let my tears out so I could be strong for her.
As we held hands down the hall to the doors of beaming morning sun, she cried, she cried so hard I was holding her up walking to the car.
Tookie wanted to go back to work. When I dropped her off, I just did not want to let her go, but she wanted to continue with her normal life.

On Tuesday 7th April myself and Tookies parents sat patiently in the hospital awaiting the final news of an exam that took place that morning.
All three of us were called to her bed side just staring at her little face with tubes and arms blackened by the needles with tears streaming down her cheeks.
The doctor came in and the news seemed to have darkened. Not only does she have stage three colon cancer, but she has a rare disease that only one out of 22,000 people have.
It is called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis.
Tookie will under go 5-6 weeks of extreme radiation with mild chemo which is a booster to shrink the effected lymph nodes and tumor to a safe point of removal.

Friday 10th April Tookie and I walked the halls of the Cancer unit awaiting chemo and radiation appointments where her father surprised her as we waited patiently in a room for answers. I have to say one thing about Victoria's Cancer Hospital, I felt so calm and filled with extreme love, I knew she was in good hands.

It  seemed as though everything comes with warnings these days, like "may cause dizziness"
In Tookies case it was "radiation may damage your bladder, your pelvis bones causing you fractures, your ovaries will be to the point of not producing eggs and you will be thrown into early menopause. The road kept adding more and more ditches.
Tookie was told her chance of having children was slim to none.
The doctor said that they will give it two weeks to allow her to chat to a fertillitity doctor to see about freezing her eggs, but to come up with that sort of money in such a short amount of time amoungst the burden of what's to come is painful.

The cancer unit is holding a conference in Victoria this week based on Tookies therapy, the reason why? Because of her age and her condition. Tookie should be in her 60s to have this type of cancer, but she is 28.

Surgery is due to commence in July 2015 where Tookie will face major life changes and challenging times ahead to try and beat this cancer. The doctors goal "going for the cure"

I have seen Tookie cry three times during this period and not only does she have the most amazing attitude, she is extremely positive and full of smiles, even though I am sure her heart is broken.

I want you, the readers to know that Melissa AKA Tookie is just one of millions suffering with Cancer, and that is why I would like to raise money not just for
My best friend, but for the Cancer unit here in Victoria.

What ever I can raise, half will be donated to Victoria Cancer Hospital, the other to help
Melissa get suppliments, prescriptions and care.

Please show your support as I run the TC 10K this April 26th 2015 where 7 different charities will have funds donated. If you see me with "running for my best friend" in hot pink on my back, blow a kiss to Tookie.

Life is so precious, live each day with love inside your heart because without life we are turned into angels.

Let  me keep my best friend!
