On November 23, 2015, Tony Cardoza was diagnosed with Stage 4 Throat Cancer.
Tony’s diagnosis came during the first few weeks of his 11th season as the Head Coach of the Durham High School wrestling team. For the past 11 years, Tony and his close friend, Trent Kenny have been coaching the Trojans wrestling team in the small farming community of Durham, CA. Their wrestling teams have enjoyed a great deal of success winning 5 of the last 6 North Section Division III Section Championships .
Throughout the years, Tony’s impact on the students has been tremendous. He continually communicates with parents, administrative staff, and teachers at the High School. Oftentimes, Tony spends outside time working with his wrestlers on their grades and personal issues. His mentoring has been effective and is evident during each new season; wrestlers that have gone on to graduate, wrestle in college and return to train and help the team. This season, Trent Kenney, Brandon Sanders and Armand Brett have stepped in to coach for the season, as Tony faces months of Chemotherapy and Radiation. He has temporarily stepped away from coaching, but not the team.
Tony came to Chico in 1989 to attend Chico State and wrestle for the Wildcats. He graduated in 1994, headed to law school and then returned to Chico in 1997 to practice law. He met his wife Shelly and together they had two children: Sophia and Nico. Tony and Trent became the Durham High coaches to build a team that Nico would one day wrestle for.
Sadly that first year, while Tony was at his first wrestling tournament as a coach, Tony’s 16 month old son Nico passed away. The family made it through that tragedy with the support of their family, friends and community. They have since had two more children: Lilah (6) and Tiago (4) and their oldest daughter Sophia is now 13 yrs. old.
Tony continued to coach the team throughout his grief and has since become a father figure for many kids that did not have one. Four months ago he and his family moved to Durham because of his love of the people and the community.
It was a shock and disappointment when Tony received his cancer diagnosis and the future of his health and the impact on his family became uncertain. Tony is self-employed. Tony begins his treatments before Christmas and will continue with it for the several months. In an effort to help support his family through this hardship, we ask for your donation. Any monies collected that are not needed to support the family will be donated to cancer research after Tony receives a “Cancer Free” diagnosis.
