On September 25, 2018, our good friend, Tonya was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and began her long journey to defeat the disease. The treatment plan involves a hospital stay of 5-6 weeks minimum before being able to go back home to her husband, Jay and their three young children, Nicholas (14), Gabriel (12), and Abigail (11). While she is receiving wonderful care at the hands of the fine techs, nurses, and doctors at the University of Virginia Medical Center, this has created an immense hardship on the family as the hospital is a 90 minute drive from their home and prevents regular visits by the children. While the family does have health insurance, there will be many financial needs that the family will face over the next several months with deductibles, co-pays, travel expenses, and the loss of much of her income. At this time, it is not known what treatments will be needed once this initial phase is complete. Please know that Tonya and Jay greatly appreciate your kindness and generosity and thank you for any support you can provide. While the future is not yet clear, they are optimistic and hopeful that the treatments will work.
