My father passed away on August 18, 2020 due to his second stroke.
His first stroke happened 4 years ago on the job which left him paralyzed. He worked at a seafood distribution company and his work regularly put him in environments where his blood pressure would rise and sometimes to dangerous levels. He would go in and out of walk-in freezers and often lift heavy items that sometimes were in the ballpark of 100lbs. His employer knew of the risks and had insurance for these types of accidents. Unfortunately, his worker’s compensation insurance case was close to being settled before his passing.
It wasn’t until two months ago that the worker’s comp insurance company started to finally take responsibility and agreed to negotiate a settlement for the damage that was done. It was such an emotional turn of events for the whole family especially my father as he started to feel like they actually cared about him and he started feeling hopeful towards life again.
He started talking about how he could finally live out his retirement plans and not be a burden to us anymore. He started the renewal process for his passport so that he could travel to visit friends and family abroad. It was almost like he was his old self again and just like that in a blink of an eye, we lost him. We were informed by his attorney that since he is no longer present to show up at his next court hearing on August 27th, he won’t get a dime from his case. He was so close to the finish line. So close.
We were all taken by surprise when he passed. How could this happen to a hard working and diligent father? That will always remain a mystery to us. But what we are certain about is one thing. He never gave up. He worked hard to recover physically while fighting his worker’s comp case to the very end. He fought to bounce back with everything he had and his perseverance is something we will never forget. He was a loving and selfless father, his heart had no boundaries. He was always looking for opportunities to provide for his family, friends, and even those he randomly came across.
We are learning a lot about how much funerals cost and they are outrageously expensive. Anything you can contribute will help tremendously and is very much appreciated. Your contribution will help lay my father to rest at his final resting place on Sept 10, 2020 at Rose Hills in California.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Matthew & Jeremy
PS: Hope everyone is staying safe out there. If you are fortunate enough to still have your parents and loved ones, we hope you cherish every moment you have with them.
Many have been asking for a Venmo option which I'll leave here: @Mattstu
