Tony Treco & MDS
Donation protected
About a month after hurricane Dorian, Tony Treco, my Uncle who lives in Abaco Bahamas, received the diagnosis of MDS and found out he would need chemotherapy.
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of cancers in which immature blood cellsin the bone marrow do not mature and therefore do not become healthy blood cells. Early on, there are typically no symptoms. Later symptoms may include feeling tired, shortness of breath, easy bleeding, or frequent infections. Some types may develop into acute myeloid leukemia.
Treatments may include supportive care, drug therapy, and stem cell transplantation.Supportive care may include blood transfusions, medications to increase the making of red blood cells, and antibiotics. Certain people can be cured with chemotherapy followed by a stem-cell transplant from a donor.
For years, Tony’s health has been declining, with him having to receive blood transfusions regularly. This became problematic when his body began to build antibodies to the foreign blood and the blood became harder to match.
Due to his poor health, Tony’s wife Stephanie was the only one who could work. That all changed when Dorian hit; they no longer had any steady funds and had to leave their home due to the devastation of the hurricane.
Each treatment will cost around $2,500, and doctors are not certain how long he will need it, but they anticipate needing at least six months of treatment. The treatment, along with the travel expenses, will not be possible for them to meet on their own.
We need your help. Any amount would be appreciated. Thank you for your help in Tony’s journey to recovery.
