In April 2019, Tony had been taking part in Elswick Harriers's Good Friday Relays. The sun was out, it was bank holiday and life was great. That afternoon he sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed a well deserved coffee and unexpectedly suffered a life changing stroke. This came as a terrible shock to Tony and all his friends and family. He was active, a picture of health and led a healthy lifestyle.
Tony is known to many in the running community having been a long standing junior coach for Elswick Harriers and latterly a coach and chair for Derwent Valley Running Club. His life evolved around running, cycling and walking his dogs. Family holidays were always an adventure, touring new places, jumping on and off trains and buses and walking to take in the sights and sounds.
Tony's working life mirrored his zest for the outdoors and helping others; working for many years with communities across Newcastle within his Parks Development role. Tony spent many hours coaching young people with disabilities in the West Denton Swimming Pool. Sadly, because of the effects of the stroke, Tony had to give up these rewarding roles.
As friends and family we want to give Tony something back. This GoFundMe page plus other fundraising activities will go towards the purchase of a recumbent trike that is adapted to his needs. The trike will allow him to be part of family life, enjoy the outdoors socially and enable him to feel, in Tony's words.... 'normal'. Funds will also support his ongoing therapy at the Neuroactive UK, which works to support people with brain injuries and strokes to maintain independence, build confidence and reduce social isolation.
