My 30 year old son Tony was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago. He went to the doctor with what he thought was severe bronchitis but after X-rays and a CT Scan was told he had a mass the size of a softball in his chest, between his lungs and right by his heart. After more than a dozen doctor appointments and blood tests, a biopsy confirmed the mass to be a rare and fast growing Yolk Sac Cancer.
Doctors are going to be very aggressive with his treatment, with initial chemotherapy treatments being several days without breaks in between. He will also need surgery in three to four months when the chemo is complete. The chemo will make him lose his beloved hair and there is the possibility treatment will leave him sterile. He was told that if he wanted children that he should look into fertility preservation right away.
There are a lot of programs that are helping with some of the costs associated with Tony's treatment. However not everything is covered, including some medications, treatment and most immediate, the fertility preservation which will need to be done prior to chemo starting. In addition, Tony lives in Hawaii and is self employed there doing construction work. He was diagnosed while visiting here and has had to pass up a few months worth of work back on the island. His treatment schedule makes it difficult to commit to work while here, so in addition to everything here, he is still needing to cover his bills in Hawaii.
Tony is an amazing person. Everyone who meets him ends up being a friend. He's a good son and brother to more than most and somewhat of a superhero to his youngest brother. Tony works hard, cares deeply and always helps out a person in need. He could really use a hand right now.
