Tom's Stroke Bills and Recovery

Early on the morning of December 13, 2016 my husband Tom Pierce woke up laying on his right side. When he tried to move, his right side was numb and immobile. After my youngest son and I got him into the car, I had my son call the doctors office and explain to them the symptoms Tom had. The doctors office said "take him to the ER". The ER immediatly started their stroke protocol. After many tests and being admitted to the hospital, the doctors agreed the he had a stroke. They still have no idea why, all they can see is the damage left behind. The medical bills continue to stack up and the recovery process is going to be long with additional procedures required. In addition to the medical bills there are some things that insurance won't pay for. These items will have to be purchased out of pocket. With Short Term Disability ending soon and no idea when he will be able to go back to work, needless to say we are struggling. The item he needs, at the time of me making this page, is a Functional Electrical Stimulation Unit for his knee and thigh that will allow him to walk without assistance as well as speed up his recovery and you guessed it, insurance will not cover it. The price of the aforementioned unit is $13,600 which needs to be paid in full before he can get it. You can see a picture of the unit below.

His brain will only recover completely if the recovery is done soon after the event. The farther away from the event the more the brain will atrophy and he will be unable to recover fully. We know that God can do anything so we are still praying that He intervenes. If he chooses not to and Tom cannot get this device, full recovery may not be attainable. He is making progress at a very slow rate. This device will speed that process up dramatically.
