Run for Recovery

On October 9, 2016, I will run the Twin Cities Marathon with a goal of raising $5,000 for the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.
Thank you for stopping by my fundraising page! My name is Tommy and I am excited to be kicking off my marathon fundraiser benefitting the Hazelden Betty Ford foundation, an organization that is very close to me and whose mission I wholeheartedly believe in.
Alcoholism and addiction is a disease that is not commonly talked about despite having such an impact on so many lives. It is my hope that sharing my story will help others who struggle with addiction or those who are concerned about the habits of a loved one.
Alcoholism and addiction is a progressive, chronic and fatal disease that affects roughly 18 million people in the US (ncadd.org ). Despite these high numbers, very few people (I've heard around 8-10%) are introduced to recovery and the number of people that find lasting recovery is even fewer. But the good news is that there is hope - and your contributions will help those who need this important treatment most.
The cost of a 28 day inpatient program runs upward of $33,000 which offers patients access to the best medical care for both physical and mental health. I was lucky to have a majority of my care covered by health insurance but not everyone is as fortunate as I was. Each day, people in treatment have no choice but to leave if they learn coverage has been denied by their insurance provider. The funds raised will directly benefit those who need financial assistance to continue their treatment and get the care they need.
Growing up as a competitive runner, completing a marathon had been a lifelong goal of mine. On October 4, 2015, I ran my first marathon at 11 months sober - something that would not have been possible while living in active addiction. By applying the same discipline, habits and commitment from my recovery to marathon training, what started as a goal to complete a marathon resulted finishing with a Boston-qualifying time of 2:56:33. This year my goal is to finish the marathon under 2:50:00 and, more importantly, to raise $5,000 for Hazelden Betty Ford. It will take all of your support, encouragement and help to make these goals possible!
Resources:
Most importantly, there is hope for people who suffer from addiction. I hope that I can be a resource for people who are struggling or have a loved one who suffers. Please reach out to me if I can be of any assistance and look into these resources for further guidance:
Hazelden Betty Ford
Alcoholics Anonymous
I won't be able to thank all of you enough for helping me reach this goal! Any contributions, whether financial or simply passing this fundraiser along to your friends, are appreciated and will make a huge impact in helping people find a new life through recovery!

I'm looking forward to having you along for the run!
