Tommy's Snowdon walk for North West Air Ambulance Charity
On the 9th August 2025 Tommy, along with several family members including his little brother Leo, Mum Kyra, Grandad Stephen, Uncle Adam, Auntie Amy and cousins Elizabeth and Jude will all be walking up Snowdon in the hope of raising much needed funds for the North West Air Ambulance Charity. Several other family members will be travelling to Wales with us to support us on our fundraising adventure. This will also help to mark the 5 year anniversary since Tommy’s horrific burns accident where he received life saving treatment from the North West Air Ambulance service.
On the 12th August 2020 Tommy, then aged 8, was involved in a horrific accident, he got caught by the flames of a garden chimnea and got engulfed by the fire.
The North West Air Ambulance service airlifted Tommy and myself directly to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in approximately 15-20 minutes, a journey that would have taken about an hour by road.
Piers, HEMS Paramedic, at the North West Air Ambulance Charity, said: “When accidents such as this happen, getting to the scene as quickly as possible is absolutely vital to minimise injuries and get the patient appropriate care. Tommy needed specialist care urgently, and working closely with the ambulance service and the team at Alder Hey, we were able to get him into surgery quickly, so he had the best chance at recovery.”
That evening Tommy underwent emergency surgery to his life changing injuries. Tommy had suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 49% of his body. The burns he suffered were to the whole of his calf and ankle on his left leg, all of his left arm from shoulder to fingertip and the majority of his right arm. He also suffered a lot of superficial burns to his back, chest, belly, neck, ears and chin.
Tommy spent the next week and a half ventilated in the Intensive Care Unit, a week and a half in the High Dependency Unit so he could be slowly weaned off the very powerful medications he was on. He also spent 3 weeks recovering on the Burns Unit, receiving physio and occupational therapy.
Five years and approximately 32 trips to surgery later, Tommy is now fully recovered and stronger than ever, both physically and mentally. He still does receive occasional treatment at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital on the life changing scars he now lives with.
I hate to imagine how much worse Tommy’s injuries and recovery process would have been if it wasn’t for the Air Ambulance getting him to hospital in the quickest time possible.
The Air Ambulance Service receive absolutely no government or NHS funding and must raise over £18 million this year to keep operational and saving lives. It’s only through fundraising and donations that they were able to attend over 3,000 incidents last year alone, making a difference to and saving the lives of many people throughout the region.
Please help Tommy and his family raise as much money for the North West Air Ambulance Service as possible and help him say a massive thank you for the lifesaving service they provided to him on what was the most horrific and traumatic day of his life.
Thank you for reading and supporting Tommy on his fundraising journey.
