It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news that Tommy, Lis’s beloved horse, has passed away at the (young) age of 20 years old. For years, Lis and Tommy shared a bond that was truly special—a bond built on trust and love. Tommy was more than just horse to Lis; he was her true partner and best friend through twelve unforgettable years. Together, they explored every corner of Alberta, from the winding trails of Blackfoot, to Riverwood Ranch and beyond into the mountains. When they weren't adventuring, Lis taught Tommy the intricacies of Liberty Work and he was a natural - he loved it and was constantly surprising everyone with how quickly he picked up new tasks and tricks.

He was her confidant, her constant, and the one who always stood by her side, no matter the trail ahead. With a connection built on trust, loyalty, and countless shared adventures, Lis and Tommy would have done anything for each other, their bond as strong as any friendship could be. Tommy was driven by a deep desire to make Lis proud and share in their adventures. His loyalty was unwavering, and he tried everything she asked of him with a heart full of love and a spirit that refused to give up. Lis, in turn, poured her heart, time, and resources into caring for him, ensuring he always had the best she could give. About six weeks ago, Tommy was vaccinated against “strangles,” a highly contagious bacterial disease that can cause severe symptoms and even be fatal to horses. This vaccine has been available in Canada for about a year and has been used for much longer in the USA. It is a core vaccine for horses and its purpose was to help protect Tommy. Unfortunately, Tommy experienced a rare and severe reaction to the vaccine, one that the vets and specialists had not encountered since its introduction here. According to Wikipedia, the potential side effects of the strangles vaccine include exactly what Tommy experienced—and then some.

Tommy was hospitalized at a local veterinary clinic, where the team worked tirelessly to treat him and determine how best to help. However, despite their efforts, they couldn’t pinpoint a clear solution. For weeks, just as one issue seemed to improve, another would emerge. Tommy fought relentlessly, but despite his incredible strength, his body was betraying him in ways he couldn't control. It became clear that he was fighting a battle he could not win, no matter how hard he tried. After nearly six weeks of struggling, with new symptoms continuing to surface and no certainty about his recovery, the most heartbreaking decision was made to spare him further pain and suffering.

Lis Swyripa, Tommy's owner, worked tirelessly to save her beloved horse and no expense was spared to give him the greatest shot at survival. But now, Lis is left with 12 years of memories, Tommy's tail and a devastating vet bill.
