Tommy Schultz Medical Fundraiser

Corrections Officer Tommy Schultz, a good friend to all, dedicated worker, and a lifelong Dexter Dreadnaught - needs our help!

On the evening of Tuesday, July 28 - Tommy felt like he was coming down with a cold, nothing out of the ordinary except he noticed his right leg was a little sore. Thinking nothing of it, he went to bed around 9:00pm. At midnight he woke up to an extremely swollen, inflamed, hot-to-the-touch, leg that was dark red in color. He could barely walk on it, something was definitely NOT right.

Tommy decided to drive himself to the University of Michigan emergency room, approximately 30 miles from his home. Half way there he had to pull over on I-94 because of the severe pain in this leg. He was forced to call an ambulance to take him the rest of the way to the hospital, leaving his beloved truck on the side of the highway.

Upon arrival to the emergency room, Tommy was admitted to the trauma & burn unit where a team could monitor the spread of the infection in his leg that seemed to be getting worse by the minute. The game plan was to treat him with IV antibiotics (a total of 5 different medications) and see if the swelling and redness would dissipate overnight.

As the doctors were doing their final rounds of the evening, they checked Tommy's leg & saw that, unfortunately, the infection had worsened and continued to spread. Their only choice was to take Tommy into emergency surgery.  During the surgery, they removed all of the infected tissue in 2 different areas on his lower leg. It's a miracle that he didn't loose his leg.

His official diagnosis is Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection.  The surgery left 2 gaping wounds on his leg that will need constant dressing changes, packing, daily care, and ultimately skin grafts to help close the wound.

Tommy has a long road of healing ahead of him and will be forced to take a leave of absence from his 13+ year career with the Department of Corrections. At this point it is unknown how long he will be in the hospital & what the long term plan for rehabilitation will be.  His dogs, Buddy & Rocco, miss him already.

While the road to recovery is largely unknown, Tommy's medical bills will continue to accumulate & grow.

For those of you who are fortunate to know Tommy know what a caring, loving, funny, & generous guy he is. He'd truly give the shirt off his back to any friend of stranger in need. Now it's our turn to be the kind of person Tommy is & return the favor for being a great friend to so many over the years.

Any amount that you are able to donate will go straight to his medical bills, rehabilitation, and aftercare. More importantly, you will help to alleviate the  mental stress he is going through right now, trying to figure out how to take care of all these bills. Tommy needs to focus all of his energy on recovery & rehabilitation.

Again, any donation would mean the world to Tommy. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about what happened to our friend  - please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.  There will be updates made to this page as his healing progresses...stay tuned!

This is one of two wounds post surgery...looks like a shark bite!  Thank God they could save his leg.

His best friends, Buddy & Rocco miss him already!! For now they have food, water, a doggy door to go outside, & someone to check in on them periodically...we may have to figure out a more long term plan for these guys, taking it day by day for now.
