The Past: In May, I graduated from Elon University with a BS in Exercise Science and a BA in Public Health. Through study abroad, mission trips and growing up supporting missions/service, I developed a passion for humanitarian aid work and global health. While at Elon, I engaged in undergraduate research and evaluated the potential of the Moringa Oleifera tree (which I learned about from my study abroad experiences) as a solution for malnutrition. The results blew us away! This nutrient packed tree expedited recovery from malnutrition, and has so many other potential health benefits to be explored.
The Present: I have been accepted for a research internship with Kalu Yala - a community in the jungle of Panama focused on sustainable development and sustainable living. As a member of the Public Health and Wellness team, I will partner with the community members of San Miguel to create sustainable solutions to the health problems that exist in their village. I will be able to apply my knowledge of Moringa trees and international development while exploring the best practices for sustainability and healthy living.
The Future: This unique, experiential learning opportunity will give me the skills and knowledge I need to continue pursuing international development. Being involved at the grassroots level will help me determine the next step in my career path: whether I should pursue medicine, health education, or community development. At Kalu Yala, I will have a comprehensive experience: working in health clinics, in schools, and directly with the community. Please consider making a pledge to support my research and career goals!
This is an ALL OR NOTHING campaign! Meaning that if I do not reach my goal of $3,000, I will not be able to participate in the program! The total cost of the 4 month program is $5,000 (not including travel). Please help me achieve my dream of working in rural health with Kalu Yala!
