Emergency Support for Tomas
Donation protected
Please help us raise $35,000 in emergency support for Tomas Johnson, who suffered a heart attack on Saturday, January 16 in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico.
His condition is critical but stable. The hospital there has extremely limited resources. Tomas’s son Aaron is with him. Aaron has been unable to see Tomas at times, and is sleeping on the floor due to overcrowding. He has been sent out by doctors to find necessary medications that they just don’t have at the hospital. Medical equipment is also very limited, so doctors have been unable to make a careful diagnosis. Tomas was almost denied care completely on Saturday at the emergency room. Luckily some friends, one who is a doctor, helped facilitate emergency care.
The very best option for treatment is to get an "air ambulance" to transport Tomas to San Antonio, Texas. Due to the severity of his condition, timely support is of the essence. Once he is in the US, his Medicare can be used, and he can receive proper care and coverage. As you can imagine, this type of transport is very expensive. All of the funds raised will be used to pay for the air transport, and additional medical costs.
Tomas is a dear friend, father, activist, community builder, and family man for so many. He is a pioneer, collaborator and inspiration in the fair trade and indigenous rights movements whose work has helped build a number of organizations and influence movements that transcend borders, culture, language and ethnicity. He's there for many of us in times of need and guidance, now it's time to pitch in to help him and his family get through a very difficult situation. This past weekend was also the 1-year anniversary of Tomas’s son’s death, so you can imagine the immense grief and stress Tomas’s family is facing. Timely support truly is of the essence. Thanks to all of you for pitching in and spreading the word!
