Tom's Fight Against AML

Donation protected
Tom Mortensen is a train dispatcher for BNSF and a former Air Force linguist.  He and his wife, Marla, and their three children Myah, 11, Adelaide, 8, and Maddox, 4, moved from the Kansas City area down to Fort Worth, Texas this past summer.

Tom was admitted to the hospital on Thursday January 24, 2019 with an unknown illness.  After many tests including a spinal tap and a bone marrow biopsy, he was finally diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on Friday, February 1st. He was then moved to a hospital capable of his required treatments, yet farther away from his home.  He will have to stay in the hospital for at least another 30 days for his first go at chemotherapy.

The goal of this GoFundMe is to help his family with medical expenses and help with the loss of income and to get ahead of these emotional expenses.  We want to show the Mortensen's that beating cancer is a team sport and we are all here to support them and help him get well.

We would like to thank everyone for your prayers and concerns for Tom and his family during this time.  Finding out this is Leukemia (AML) is a complete surprise and one that brings a heaviness on to the Mortensen family.  Most of us can only imagine the whirlwind of emotions and thoughts going through this loving family’s mind, spirit, and in Tom’s case his body as well.

Those of us here at work who have grown to know Tom and the amazing individual that he is, the weight of this is felt all around.  He’s always shown his true character not only in his work, but in general conversation as well.  He’s one of the most genuine individuals you’ll have the privilege to meet and a blessing to call a friend.

Before moving to Ft Worth, we were all in a smaller office in Kansas City.  There we all got to know each other well.  It became a second family to many of us.  At work, he’s well respected with those he works alongside of, so of course when we heard Tom was out due to illness we were all generally concerned.  When the long awaited diagnosis came in it was a shock to all as I’m sure it has with his family.  Leukemia…wow…how would we handle this news?  To look your spouse and children in the eyes after they learned the seriousness of the fight ahead.  One thing is certain and that is no matter what, he will not have to go through this alone.  Each of us reading this are all part of one community that is connected to Tom directly or indirectly by those we know and love.

Mortensen family, you’re not alone in this fight and we’re all in it together as one.  We pray and hope that you can pull through this Tom.   If you or the family need anything, we’re there for you guys.   We would love to include each of our families and friends the chance to give to an amazing person and directly influence a positive light during a time that could use a silver lining.  Please do what you can along with sharing this page and keep checking back for updates as the family allows.  Thank you for your donations, time and most of all your prayer.  God bless!
