I’m writing on behalf of my nephew, Tom, and sister, Karen (Tom’s mother). Tom was born in 1984 with a serious heart condition and underwent multiple surgeries early in his life. Tom received treatment in multiple cities for this condition (Rochester, Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago) and in 2006 underwent surgery to reverse a failing repair that was performed when he was six years old. Since then, he has undergone several procedures as a bridge to a transplant. He is now at the point where he needs a new heart. In addition, the medications he has taken through the years have damaged his liver to the extent that he also needs a completely new liver. He is now officially on the transplant list at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. We are hoping to raise funds to help cover a variety of expenses, which include:
1. Temporary Housing - once Tom has the transplant, he will be required to live less than an hour from the hospital for 4-8 weeks. Therefore, Karen, Tom, and their dogs, Teddy & Daisy, will need to rent an apartment for the initial part of his recovery.
2. Daily expenses - these include travel to and from Duke Hospital (2-1/2 hours from their home in Wilmington NC), parking, food, , etc.
3. Home expenses - Tom will be out of work for several months, so we’re hoping this fund will help to cover expenses for his home in Leland, NC. These include his mortgage and utilities.
4. Medical expenses that are not covered by insurance.
Tom's grandparents, Tom and Sue Grieco, were always there for Tom, Karen, and Tom's father John (who passed away in 2009), during all of the many surgeries and recuperations. Grandma Sue went to our Lord after a long illness on August 16, 2021. We know that she would want donations made to help Tom in lieu of flowers. Unfortunately, because Tom is on a wait list for a transplant, neither Tom nor his mother are able to attend the services for their beloved grandmother and mother and we know they will miss her dearly.
Please consider supporting Tom and Karen with your love, prayers, and a financial gift. It will be appreciated more than you know!
