We are on a mission to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer and raise some money to donate to this worthy charity, in an effort to contribute to funds needed to improve screening and treatment options available to men across the UK.
When trying to think of innovative ways to do this, we came across the Screwball Rally which involves travelling around Europe in a vehicle costing no more than £1000, in fancy dress! Having toyed with some themes, we've chosen the theme of Dads Army! We chose this theme as we found it fitting that the older generation are the ones who generally don't get checked and are more likely to suffer significant complications arising from Prostate Cancer due to late diagnosis. We will be in fancy dress for the journey while travelling through various countries in Europe in our 18yr old van covered in Dad's Army decal stickers!
Scary facts....
1. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with over 50,000 men diagnosed each year.
2. Prostate Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the UK.
3. About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
4. There are around 12,000 prostate cancer deaths in the UK every year, that's 33 every day (2017-2019)
5. 7% of all cancer deaths in the UK (male and female combined) are caused by prostate cancer.
How does fundraising help?
Cancer affects us all at some time or another whether directly or indirectly and we need to do everything we can to keep funding the pioneering screening and treatments that are evolving year on year.
Prostate cancer treatments have significantly improved over time, leading to better survival rates and quality of life for those affected but this can't be done without your help.
Whilst diagnosis numbers are rising, this is actually good news as this is down to advancements in early detection through PSA testing and improved treatment options leading to a much better survival rate. If detected early, most men can live a normal life generally unaffected by this cancer.
We have chosen this charity in particular as some of our work colleagues are currently (or have been) affected by this disease and currently a close member of Tom's family is undergoing treatment, a treatment that 10 years ago wouldn't have been available for this type of cancer if it wasn't for advanced research and scientific developments.
Thank you for reading this. We know life is difficult at the moment with the cost of living crisis, so if you cannot spare any financial support then please if you could just share this we would be grateful.
We would also like to thank our main sponsors for helping with the van and equipment needed for our trip:
