Tom Bailey's Healing Journey
Donation protected
Early Sunday morning, January 6, 2019, while walking back to a condominium he was renting with friends for a weekend at Blackjack Ski Resort in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Tom was struck by a snowmobile, sending him airborne and resulting in him landing facedown into the snow, approximately 20 feet from the site of the impact. With the aid of friends, onlookers, and the rapid arrival of Michigan State Police and first responders, Tom was stabilized and transported to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital. The man driving the snowmobile was arrested and charged with operating with a high blood alcohol content causing injury and driving with a suspended license.
In the hospital in Ironwood, Tom was treated for bruising and lacerations to his scalp and legs, and X-rays revealed 10 fractured ribs as well as fractures in a cervical vertebra and a partially collapsed lung. Later that day, Tom was transported to the trauma wing of Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Further imaging revealed a third degree separation of the acromioclavicular joint in his right arm and a minor separation of the same joint in his left arm.
Tom was discharged on January 10 and is back home and resting on the road to recovery. Given his injuries, the smallest of movements remain difficult, and the most menial of tasks painful. While he waits for the fractures to heal, he is working with therapists to increase the range of motion in his arms and slowly return his respiratory volumes to normal.
For those who know Tom and his profession, these injuries are especially devastating. He will be away from his job at Heid Music until late February, and hopes to return to the stage with Vic Ferrari - playing the trumpet, providing a backbone of percussion, and leading the crowd in song - soon after.
Tom is grateful for the prayers, support, and encouragement of family and friends, and we now ask for your help in limiting the financial burden that being in the wrong place at the wrong time created for Tom.
